Marcus Buchecha was already considered the biggest name in jiu-jitsu and already owned the record for total world titles. But last weekend, the Checkmat black belt, Buchecha, extended his record in the open class division and tied Roger Gracie for 10 world black belt titles - Roger had won three in the absolute and seven in his weight class. Still recovering from the battle of the weekend, the São Paulo 27 year old said that he still did not realize what he did in the sport.
"I achieved a feat that I never thought I would reach when I started in the sport. When I bought my first magazine, I remember that Pé-de-Pano and Roger Gracie were the big names in jiu-jitsu. They were my first idols and to have tied Roger with 10 world titles is something I still can not describe. I just know that it's something great to achieve in the sport. I am very happy!" said the champion.
In the finals of the ultra heavyweight division Buchecha defeated Gustavo Dias with a choke. In the absolute, he fought in the finals against his friend, Leandro Lo, one of the greats of BJJ and had been winning all season.
"Leandro Lo is a great friend that jiu-jitsu introduced me to and I knew it would be the toughest fight. In my opinion, he is the best fighter in the world. He has been making history by winning titles in several different weight categories, I think our friendship did not interfere with anything in the fight. Everyone was chasing the same dream. It was a very tough end!" He said.
The next challenge for Buchecha will be on July 23, where he will have his rematch against Roger Gracie at the Gracie Pro event, organized by Kyra Gracie. The first meeting between them took place in 2012 in Metamoris and ended in a draw after 20 minutes of fighting. This time the confrontation will be 10 minutes with IBJJF rules.
Buchecha is also confirmed to compete in the Heavyweight Grand Prix in the IBJJF Pro League, which takes place on 26 August in Las Vegas. The tournament will bring together eight major names in world jiu-jitsu seeking the prize of $40,000. And to end the season, the Checkmat black belt will hunt for his second title in the ADCC in weight and absolute. The ADCC grappling event is largest in the world and will take place in September in Finland.
